ADA Parking Sign Placement Areas
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, accessible parking spaces must display the international symbol of accessibility on signs mounted at least 60 inches high and visible over parked vehicles.
For van spaces, the sign must include “van accessible,” and surface decals alone do not replace required above-ground signage.
If you are unsure about ADA parking lot requirements, ADA parking space placement, striping details, or where an ADA parking sign should be located, we can talk through what your property needs specifically. We know these standards matter, and we help customers get the international symbol right without making the process more complicated than it needs to be.
Layout, Access, and Compliance
A lot of property owners are not just looking for an ADA parking striping contractor; they need someone who can help make the whole lot work better while keeping accessibility front and center. That means thinking through:
The goal is not just painting handicap spaces. The goal is creating a cleaner, safer, more convenient site where people can move through the property with confidence and where accessibility is built into the layout from the ground up.
Featured Project: High School Parking Lot
At this high school parking lot with a little over 200 parking spaces, ADA compliance came down to getting the details right. Based on the number of spaces provided, the lot required 6 ADA parking spaces to meet current accessibility standards. At that count, at least one space must be van accessible, and this property was designed to meet that requirement as well.
Each accessible parking space also requires an adjacent access aisle, and all 6 accessible spaces on this project were laid out with the required 5-foot aisle. For the required van accessible parking space, the layout must meet one of two standards: either an 11-foot-wide space with a 5-foot aisle, or a space that is at least 8 feet wide with an 8-foot aisle next to it. That level of detail matters, because ADA compliance is not just about painting symbols on pavement. It is about making sure the layout, spacing, and access all work the way they should.
